In a new video posted at Sonic State Amped, Cavalera Conspiracy bassist Johny Chow tells us about his ESP/Seymour Duncan setup, and how it helps him get the tone needed for a range of different bands and sounds. In addition to Cavalera Conspiracy, Johny has played with Soulfly, Fireball Ministry, George Lynch's Souls of We, Switched, and many other bands, and he uses his Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickup and ESP bass combination to provide him with his signature sound.
Despite the range of styles Johny brings to the table, he rocks it all seamlessly with a single pickup, Seymour Duncan's SPB-3 Quarter Pound for P-bass. āI love the Quarter Pound. It gives me the freedom to have the more rounded, ā70s-style sound that I use in Fireball Ministry and Souls Of We. But can also give me an aggressive, rip-your-face-off bass tone. It has a tight, clear low end that Iām never tripping over when playing fast syncopated notes.ā
This video was recorded at the Seymour Duncan booth at this year's Musikmesse in Frankfurt, Germany. At Musikmesse, Chow was on hand to provide bass and guitar pickup advice, as well as to demonstrate the new Liberator solder-less pickup change system.
